The LIFE Active Blanket Bog in Wales project aims to bring about a significant and sustained improvement to two of the most important Special Areas of Conservation for blanket bog in the UK – the Migneint-Arenig-Dduallt, and the Berwyn and South Clwyd Mountains. Although large areas of blanket bog still occur in Wales, the majority have been seriously degraded through aforestation, encroachment by alien species, over grazing and either burning.
The project is a partnership between the RSPB, Countryside Council for Wales, Environment Agency Wales, and Forestry Commission Wales, with the majority of funding (75%) secured from the EU LIFE-Nature programme.
During its 5 year life span, the project’s activities will include tree removal, re-seeding, the creation of fire control areas, as well as work with local farmers, schools and the surrounding communities. The project is anticipated to make a major contribution to the conservation of blanket bogs in Wales, as well as promoting awareness and best practice throughout the UK.
